"Anti-Government" Couple on Run After Kidnapping Their Own Children From Court-Appointed Guardian

This story probably isn't going to end well:
Joshua Michael Hakken and his wife Sharyn Hakken are on the run in
Florida after kidnapping their own two children from Sharyn's
mother this morning. Patricia Hauser has had legal custody of her
grandchildren, four-year-old Cole and two-year-old Chase, since
2012, when Joshua and Sharyn lost custody for displaying pot in
front of their sons at an "anti-government rally" in Louisianna.

ABC Action News has more: 

Investigators say Joshua Michael Hakken, 35 entered the home of
Patricia Hauser at 14040 Shady Shores Drive around 6:30 a.m. Hauser
is the maternal grandmother of Chase Hakken, 2, and Cole Hakken, 4.
It's believed Hakken's wife, 34-year-old Sharyn Hakken was waiting
outside.

Investigators did not know if the children were taken at
gunpoint and it was not clear if the mother was directly involved
in the abduction.

Reporters were told at a Wednesday afternoon news conference the
State of Louisiana took away the parents' parental rights and gave
Hauser temporary custody. 

Joshua Hakken tied up Hauser, took the children and fled in
Hauser's 2009 silver Toyota Camry, which was later found a few
blocks away.   

According to investigators, the couple lost custody of the two
boys after an anti-government rally in Louisiana. The father was
charged was possession of marijuana in the presence of the
children.

Afterward, Joshua Hakken tried to take the children, reportedly
at gunpoint, from a Louisiana foster care facility, but was
thwarted, according to the sheriff's office.

There aren't a lot of details out there right now, so it's
possible that the Hakkens really were a danger to their kids. But
it will be just so goddamn awful if all of this is the result of
them using some marijuana at a rally in front of their
kids. 

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Hakkens run an
engineering firm in the Tampa area. Their parental rights were
terminated by a Louisiana court yesterday. 

Update: More on Hakken's June 17, 2012 drug
charge that may have gotten his kids taken away,
from the Time-Picayune police blotter: "Joshua M.
Hakken, age 34 of 3609 S Sterling Avenue, Tampa, FL, was arrested
for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and
Possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a
minor."

Update II: Florida media outlets are really
playing up the anti-government angle. This is at the top of the
Orlando Sentinel's home page.

Nothing says "Pathetically clinging to youth" quite like a middle-age man wearing Ed Hardy clothing. Remember a few years back when a post-divorce Jon Gosselin from Jon & Kate Plus 8 was, well, relevant? What was that dope wearing in damn near every paparazzi photo? That's right -- an awful, tacky, shiny, obnoxiously loud Ed Hardy T-shirt. Please, guys, the world doesn’t need another Jon Gosselin. In fact, I'm more or less positive that we didn't need the first one.

#8: Bright Sneakers

Adults can wear sneakers with colors on them. That's fine. We don't live in a black and white world. But there's just something about a 30-year-old guy wearing a pair of electric yellow sneakers with neon green laces that doesn't quite look right. Tone it down.

Barcelona Ties PSG In A Wild Champions League Game After An Awful Goalie Blunder With 15 Seconds Left

Barcelona tied PSG 2-2 in a wild Champions League quarterfinal game in Paris today.

It was 2-1 Barcelona in the 93rd minute, just seconds from the final whistle, when goalie Victor Valdes let in a soft goal to PSG's Blaise Matuidi.

It ended 2-2, and three goals were scored in the last 10 minutes.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 37th minute, but he was taken off at halftime due to a hamstring injury. Here's his goal:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic then tied it up in the 81st, 1-1

In the 89th minute the PSG goalie committed a silly foul in the box, giving Barcelona a penalty. Xavi converted it to put them up 2-1:

But then disaster struck in the 93rd minute. Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed a ball to the foot of Blaise Matuidi, who fired a volleyed shot at goal. Somehow the ball got through Victor Valdes for the game-tying goal:

The two teams will play next week in Barcelona to decide who goes through to the Champions League semifinals.

Gay Marriage Debate To Continue After Supreme Court Rulings

NEW YORK -- However the Supreme Court rules after its landmark hearings on same-sex marriage, the issue seems certain to divide Americans and states for many years to come.

In oral arguments Tuesday and Wednesday on two cases involving gay couples' rights, the justices left open multiple options for rulings that are expected in June. But they signaled there was no prospect of imposing a 50-state solution at this stage. With nine states now allowing same-sex marriages and other states banning them via statutes or constitutional amendments, that means a longer spell with a patchwork marriage-rights map – and no early end to bruising state-by-state battles in the courts, in the legislatures and at the ballot box.

Four Months After Sandy, The Rockaways Still Look Awful [PHOTOS]

When Hurricane Sandy struck no one was prepared, least of all the communities in the Far Rockaways and Staten Island that were hardest hit. More than four months later, these communities are still reeling. 

In November, the damage was so bad that Mayor Bloomberg made it clear there would never be a new wooden boardwalk. When we went out there residents spoke of the difficulty and delays in getting emergency aid.

By December business and individuals were getting back on their feet, but power and telephone service had only just resumed for many residents. In January as Congress fought over the specifics of an aid deal, people in the Rockaways were busy trying to save their homes.

In early February, early plans for how to use the first $1.77 billion for New York City from the $51 billion in federal aid for Hurricane Sandy relief, were released, but city officials warned it could take months for the money to be distributed.

But residents have persevered on their own. With local businesses like Suncycle Studios reopening already. And the YANA (You Are Never Alone) Center, another important aid center during the initial weeks after the storm, is close to reopening with the help of Occupy Sandy and other volunteer organizations.

Just last week, plans for aid were finalized, and in the Rockaways people say it is desperately needed. They're close to giving up hope.

 

As you drive into the Rockaways, a blue sky filled with puffy white clouds can give the impression everything is back to normal.

But there are many reminders of work to be done.

In February, Mayor Bloomberg presented New York City's initial plan for its first $1.77 billion installment from the $51 billion relief funds set aside by Congress.

It's a long term investment that is worth the effort and the sooner you realize it, the better. 

"One of my favorite mentors said to me that you have to learn to jettison the people and things out of your life that just don’t matter and put 100 percent of your energy into things that do have meaning to you. That was very liberating for me. I used to go to all these places because I couldn’t say no. Now I pick and choose, and I say no very easily, because I know what’s important to me. I only wish that I learned how to do that earlier in my life."
