De-Extinction Would Be Really Cool

article on the
costs and benefits of de-extinction
, i.e., using biotechnology
to resurrect species. The article by Stanford University scholars
Jacob Sherkow and Henry Greely note that extinct species might be
brought back to life by means of back-breeding, cloning, or genetic
engineering.


Back-breeding would use selective breeding of species closely
related aim at producing the phenotype of the extinct species,
e.g., the Tauros
Project
is working to revive the auroch. Cloning could be used
if a sufficiently well-preserved nucleus from the tissue of an
extinct species could be tranferred into the enucleated egg of a
similar species and then implanted in a surrogate. So far this has
only been attempted with the recently extinct
Pyrenean ibex
. A kid was born but died of lung malformations
soon after.


Perhaps the more promising, though more technically difficult
route toward de-extinction, would be to isolate DNA from preserved
tissue of an extinct species and then sequence it, e.g., a wooly
mammoth. Then that information could be used to alter the genetic
sequences in a closely related species, e.g., an Indian elephant,
resulting in a wooly mammoth.


The authors observe:



De-extinction is a particularly intriguing application of our
increasing control over life. We think it will happen. The most
interesting and important question is how humanity will deal with
it.



They suggest that some might object to de-extinction on the
grounds that the resurrected creatures might be exploited, vectors
for pathogens, invasive, examples of "playing god," or lessen
people's concerns about extinction. On the benefit side, the
authors them as ...



... falling into five categories: scientific knowledge,
technological advancement, concrete environmental benefits,
justice, and “wonder.”



To my mind, those benefits clearly outweigh the rather
insubstantial objections cited by the authors, especially the last
one. As the authors write:



The last benefit might be called “wonder,” or, more colloquially
“coolness.” This may be the biggest attraction, and possibly the
biggest benefit, of de-extinction. It would surely be very cool to
see a living wooly mammoth. And while this is rarely viewed as a
substantial benefit, much of what we do as individuals—even many
aspects of science—we do because it’s “cool.”

Bad Cop


Three years ago, an Arkansas court found police officer Coleman
Brackney guilty of
negligent homicide
in the shooting death of James Ahern.
Brackney spent one month in jail and was fired from the Bella Vista
police department. But he later got the conviction expunged, and a
state board ruled that he could once again serve as a police
officer. The Sulphur Springs City Council recently hired Brackney
as their new police chief.

How 'Mad Men' Could Cover Events Of The Late 1960s

Watching how "Mad Men" incorporates the real-life historical and cultural events of 1960s into its storylines has become a favorite past-time for fans of the hit AMC advertising drama. And as the show's Season 6 timeline approaches the tumultuous and revolutionary late '60s, the potential for "Mad Men" to intersect with the cultural touchstones of that era could be a fascinating aspect of the new season.

Although the precise starting point of the upcoming sixth season is a closely-held secret, we know that Season 5 left off in the spring of 1967 and it's not unusual for "Mad Men" seasons to skip ahead 6 months or so from where they last left off. Here's How US Allies Could Shoot Down Missiles From North Korea

Things are heated on the Korean peninsula, and while there's plenty of talk from the North about launching a "cutting edge strike" on the United States, their missile capabilities are mostly limited to attacks against U.S. forces in South Korea or Japan.

But were they to actually launch missiles, America and its allies are far from defenseless.

South Korea and Japan currently have the Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target system, better known as the PATRIOT. It's a highly mobile system that can be set up in under one hour.

First designed for an anti-aircraft role in the late 1970s, the Patriot was later modified to defend against ballistic missiles. With a radar that can pick up threats more than 60 miles away and armed with a high-explosive warhead, it's designed to launch missiles that detonate and produce shrapnel when it gets close to a threat, according to PBS.

The PATRIOT system was used extensively during the first Gulf War against Iraqi SCUD missiles, with varying degrees of success. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, however, they worked extremely well.

From a report of the Defense Science Board:

All nine enemy tactical ballistic missiles that threatened areas designated for Patriot defense were engaged. Eight of these engagements were observed by enough other sensors to conservatively declare them successes; the ninth engagement is judged to be a probable success. None of the attacking tactical ballistic missiles caused any damage or loss of life to the coalition forces.

Here's how it works:

The land-based PATRIOT system will soon be joined by U.S. ships en route to the area, the USS John McCain and the USS Decatur. Both are Aegis-class warships, meaning they're capable of intercepting and destroying ballistic missiles "above the atmosphere during the midcourse phase of a hostile ballistic missile's flight."

The holistic anti-North Korean missile system will also be bolstered soon by the deployment of another missile defense system to Guam, the Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD).

Warner Bros. Could Lose $140 Million On 'Jack The Giant Slayer'

We knew this was coming 

"Jack the Giant Slayer" could lose between $125 million to $140 million for Warner Bros. and partner Legendary Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

The Ewan McGregor fairytale inspired film cost an estimated $195 million to produce.  

During its six-week run at theaters, it has earned $158.1 million worldwide.  

The last two big films to see similar losses at theaters were Disney's "John Carter" and Universal's "Battleship" in 2012. 

Last year, "Speed Racer" lost Warner Bros. more than $114.5 million. 

"Jack" isn't the only film Warner Bros. should be worried about. 

None of its other releases so far this year — "Gangster Squad," "Bullet to the Head," "Beautiful Creatures," and "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" – have fared well at theaters this year. 

Action flick "Bullet to the Head," featuring Sylvester Stallone bombed in February earning $4.5 million opening weekend. The film, which has an estimated budget of $55 million, has earned $9.5 million to date worldwide.  

The $345.1 million worldwide gross of all five of Warner Bros. releases this year is trumped by that of Disney's "Oz the Great and Powerful" which has earned $415.8 million worldwide in four weekends. 

Warner Bros.' box-office intake should improve vastly in the coming two months.

Come June, Warner Bros. will hope Superman film "Man of Steel" will have the same summer box-office power as Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy did at theaters. 

"The Dark Knight Rises" alone earned more than $1 billion last year at theaters. 

Out next for Warner Bros. is Jackie Robinson baseball film, "42" starring Harrison Ford. 

Given its current box-office slump, it's a wonder the studio didn't move up the highly-anticipated "Gatsby" in order for it to gain more traction at theaters. 

Instead, when it debuts May 10, "Gatsby" will be sandwiched between two other big releases.  

The F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation will have to compete with Disney's "Iron Man 3" out the week prior and Paramount's "Star Trek Into Darkness" the following week.

Self-Healing Circuits Will Make Durable Electronics

New circuits could make our electronics resistant to damage and manufacturing flaws by making them self-healing. They could also make our electronics more energy efficient or faster.

The circuits don't physically heal themselves, but use a second processor to reconfigure the way the circuit performs tasks around the damage.

The chip can tune its own performance on the fly: The second processor analyzes sensor data about temperature, voltage, current, power, and more from the circuit. It then uses a program to optimize the chip based on these parameters. It can be set to prioritize energy savings or to make the computation speedier.

MIT Technology Review says that the circuits could be resilient to manufacturing flaws, could withstand damage caused by high temperatures, or the deterioration that comes with aging.

Those are the issues that plague electronics of all kinds: from military communications equipment to consumer electronics, like our phones, which take a beating as it is.

To test this, the researchers, led by Ali Hajmiri of Caltech, repeatedly blasted the chip with a laser to destroy about half of its 100,000 transistors. After only tens of milliseconds after the laser blasts, the chip had adjusted and was working properly again. Before the damage the chip can work on half the power of a normal circuit because it can reconfigure itself for maximum efficiency.

When extreme conditions occur, for example a circuit overheats, the chip can adjust to make up for this. The rest of the time, when the circuit is performing normally, it can act more efficiently.

"You can design a chip that will run in these worst-case scenarios, but most of the time it’s not the worst case, and you could be running faster or with less power most of the time,” says Subhasish Mitra, a Stanford University researcher who was not involved with the work, told Technology Review.

Imagine, a drop-resistant phone! Miracle for clumsy people everywhere.

DIGITIMES: Apple IS Working On A TV, And It Could Be Ready By Year End (AAPL)

Apple is still working on a TV, and it could be ready by the end of this year, though it's more likely to come at the start of 2014, say DigiTimes reporters Julian Ho and Alex Wolfgram.

According to their "industry supply chain sources" the TV "is likely" to support Ultra HD, or 4K, which is the next generation of high definition. They also hear it will have voice and motion controls.

Previously, Peter Misek at Jefferies reported Apple was looking to get TV panels that are close to 4K quality without the 4K cost.

We would be surprised if Apple actually did "4K" in its first TV. Remember, Apple didn't put Retina on its first iPad Mini. It was slow to add LTE, waiting for carriers to support it. There is very little 4K content right now.

Ho and Wolfgram say Apple and its manufacturing partner Foxconn are looking for a supplier. Most suppliers, they say, are busy making panels for other TV makers, so they won't be able to supply panels for Apple. However, Ho and Wolfgram say LG could be the supplier.

Most of the Apple product rumors so far this year have centered on a smart watch. It looked like Apple had set aside its TV ambitions.

The Apple television has been rumored for years. DigiTimes in particular has put out multiple reports on it. In December of 2011, DigiTimes said an Apple TV would be out in 2012. Then in 2012, it knocked down its own report saying Apple's suppliers weren't able to make TV panels.

And then, there's the analysts. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster said the Apple TV would be ready at the end of 2012. That didn't happen. Now he says it's coming at the end of 2013.

Peter Misek at Jefferies said last August that the Apple TV was in full production. Then a few months later, another Jefferies analyst said it was imminent. Now Misek says it won't be out this year.

DigiTimes tends to be early with its reporting, so it often looks wrong in retrospect, since company plans change. The truth of the matter is that when Apple really decides to build a TV, we're going to hear about it. There will be a reports from all over the place.

In this case, we'd classify this as early rumblings. Basically, Apple is still interested in the TV market, it just hasn't quite found what it's looking for yet.
