Louisiana Police Claim Hakkens Said They Were "Taking a Journey to the Armageddon”

In response
to overwhelming calls for information about the Florida couple who
"abducted" their own children yesterday, the Slidell Police
Department in Slidell, Louisiana, has issued a press release about
the
June 2012 arrest of Joshua Hakken and the confiscation of his
children
:

In June of 2012, Joshua and Sharon Hakken were staying at a
local hotel in Slidell. The Slidell Police Department
was called in reference to a disturbance involving Mr. and
Mrs. Hakken. When police arrived, both Mr. and Mrs.
Hakken were acting in a bizarre manner that alarmed officers.
They were talking about “completing their ultimate journey”
and were traveling across the country to “take a journey to
the Armageddon”. Let it be noted that both of their
children were present in the hotel room at the time.

Based off their behavior, and the fact that narcotics and
weapons were located inside of the hotel room,
officers contacted the Office of Child Services (OCS). OCS
determined that the children were in danger and needed to be
taken into custody by the State of Louisiana and temporarily
placed in a foster home. Mr. Hakken was placed under arrest
for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia,
and the Use of a Controlled and Dangerous Substance in
the Presence of Minors. Officers also took custody of several
weapons for safe keeping.

Approximately two weeks later, Slidell Police were notified that
Mr. Hakken had shown up to the foster family home (somewhere
in Hammond, LA) with a firearm demanding the return of his
children. The foster parents called 911, and Mr. Hakken fled
without his children. We have heard nothing until yesterday.
Slidell Police was contacted by the FBI and the authorities
from Florida to inform us about the kidnapping. They requested any
and all information that we had on the Hakken’s.

I asked the Slidell Police Department for Hakken's arrest
report, and was told that it's being kept private because Hakken's
drug charges are still pending. As I noted in an update a few
minutes ago, the Slidell Police Department says the claim that
Hakken was arrested at an "anti-government rally" simply isn't
true, and they don't know where it came from.

Earlier today, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Hakken
uses the name "SailingBull" on various message boards (he owns a
sailboat, and he's a graduate of USF, which has a bull mascot).
After looking through nearly all of
Hakken's 190+ posts on the Kel-Tec Owner's Group
, I got the
impression of a normal guy with libertarian/Tea Party leanings. He
posted about opposing the death penalty, the war on drugs, and the
Patriot Act; about loving his wife and sons; and about his
enthusiasm for sailing, firearms, and building a new grill in their
backyard. The "Armageddon" line is particularly confusing seeing as
Hakken appears to be a member of secularhomeschool.com,
where, in 2010, he described himself
as an atheist:

I definitely plan on teaching about different religions to my
children when it comes up in context of other studies: i.e.
history, social studies, geography, philosophy... Right now we're
in the pre-preschool phase so I've got time.

As far as teaching the dogma of any particular religion, I will
probably limit my teaching of that in context with what / why
people believe and how it has / will affect the actions of
people.

Personally, I think every religion from Christianity to Athiesm
is a plague. The notion that we can answer questions we have no
knowledge base for is rediculous. While there may be redeeming
lessons from a particular religion, most organized faiths have
historically been used to shed personal responsibility while
stripping the individual of personal rights and freedoms of it's
congregation.

Religion does not teach moral value, the best it can accomplish is
to coexist and not intrude on such values.

It's worth noting that law enforcement in Florida are painting
the Hakkens as anti-government extremists at the same time police
in Louisiana are describing them as death cultists. I suppose they
could be both, but they could also be neither.

The 16 Biggest Mass Layoff Announcements Of The Past Year

Miriam Abrego, 55, unemployed, california

We're expecting the March jobs report Friday, and expectations are that nonfarm payroll employment will increase by 193,000.

The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 7.7 percent.

While the labor market has been trudging along slowly, mass layoffs in the past year have weighed on employment.

We drew on Bloomberg data to highlight the 16 biggest layoff announcements since April of last year.

16. First Solar: 2,000

Percent of Employees Cut:
28.57 percent

Number of Employees After Cuts:
7,000

First Solar announced that it would layoff almost a third of its workforce early last year and shut down its factory in Germany. This comes as the European market for green energy has deteriorated.

10 Huge Brands That Committed Suicide

Hummer

From drug trafficking scandals to poisonous air purifiers, big companies have stumbled into all sorts of suicidal mishaps that have killed top brands.

Chrysler and Sharper Image are among the companies that failed to save some of their own huge brands.

Here are 10 examples of corporate missteps that could have been avoided.

Atari, Inc.

In 1972, Atari released Pong, thereby pioneering the video game. By the end of the decade, it was the fastest-growing company in the US, its Atari 2600 gaming console shaping up to be the world's best-selling console.

Then the 80s happened.

In 1982, Atari majorly hyped up two video games that flopped on release. One of the games was E.T., which is today considered to be the worst video game ever made. Atari buried millions of unsold E.T. game cartridges in the desert, and in 1984, Warner Communications sold the problem-riddled home gaming division of Atari Inc. to Tramel Technology.

Circuit City

Circuit City flopped for many reasons — failure to manage its inventory and website are two major causes of the electronics retailer's decline.

What makes the Circuit City case unique, however, is the lesson in the value of one's best employees.

In March of 2007, Circuit City set itself on a slippery slope when it fired 3,400 of its highest paid workers. The company said that replacing these employees with those willing to work for less was part of an effort to improve the bottom line.

Analysts were quick to note an almost immediate decline in Circuit City's business. About 60 percent of the employees fired held in-store positions: "...this is clearly why April sales were worse," said Tim Allen, an analyst with Jefferies & Co. "They were replaced with less knowledgeable associates."

The Washington Post reported that the job cuts were "backfiring." By early 2009, all of Circuit City's stores were closed.

The XFL

The XFL was a highly televised sports league that combined football and professional wrestling. Organized in 1999, it was a joint venture between NBC and the World Wrestling Federation. Setting records for the lowest primetime ratings in television history, the league was discontinued after just one season.

Dubbed the biggest sports bust of all time by ESPN, the XFL brought NBC and the WWF to a combined $70 million loss. Nevertheless, NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol reflected on the league as "one of the most fun experiences of my life." Very, very expensive fun.

Game Developers Are Migrating To Mobile

Game developers are increasingly turning to smartphones and tablets for their next project. A survey of 2,500 developers from the organizers&of the recent&Game Developers Conference&found that 58 percent were planning their next project for mobile devices. Approximately 38 percent of those surveyed said their last project was on mobile. Over 50 percent of those surveyed said they were independent developers, indicating that their could be some bias towards mobile in the survey, since mobile games are cheaper to develop than budget-busting console games.& Mobile gaming isn't going to knock out more immersive and graphics-driven desktop and console gaming any time soon. Hand-held consoles, however, are directly threatened by the increasingly sophisticated crop of iOS and Android games and will see less and less developer interest. Mobile games have been the primary beneficiary of the app store era. No wonder, given they are the largest time bucket on both smartphones and tablets.&A BII analysis found that 70 percent of the top 200 grossing apps on the iOS App Store were games (the proportion was 75 percent on Google Play). Among developers working on mobile, 90 percent planned working on iOS, 75 percent on Android, and only 15 percent on Windows Phone. Click here to view a larger version of this chart.
